Try looking him up on the CWGC site as suggested. Sometimes it says 'no results' but worth checking again as the site sometimes has gives a false response - probably because of a high usage at the time.

If he is listed, it will say were he is buried, or where his name is commerated on a memorial. Some records will give the next of kin.

CWGC records all deaths of serving soldiers - even if he'd gotten run over by a bus on Oxford St whilst home on leave.

Any death in the UK was registered in the usual way - it wouldn't matter if he was a Canadian in a base hospital at Shorncliffe (the Folkestone registers are full of these guys) or a wounded sailor in a base hospital at Rosyth (this would be with the GROS, not the GRO though) .

There were special War Returns registers (for the Boer War, WW1, WW2) that have deaths of soldiers overseas for these periods. FMP has the GRO ref for those the GRO holds - Edinburgh, Belfast & Dublin hold the rest of these registers.

I have a relative died in 1916. His death was reg in England, does that mean he was definitely NOT killed in the War ? I can't find his exact details at CWGC
