There is a marriage in 1927 on Scotlandspeople for an Elizabeth Sorbie,but Gardner doesnt match as spouse.

Perhaps they didnt marry in England

The birth certificate does say Elizabeth gardner formerly Sorbie.

There is a tree on Ancestry with Elizabeth b 1903 Lanarkshire and husband Arthur George Gardner.
Apparently she died in Canada in 1982.
Maybe the tree owner can be contacted.

The thought that one or both may have been previously married has crossed my mind. Does the birth certificate say mother's name, ABC formerly XYZ.

Can't find a marriage for the Arthur Geo and Elizabeth - maybe they didn't marry each other.
Maybe Elizabeth was already married, or maybe Arthur was. I have an incident in my own tree where three children were born to one woman out of wed lock because her partner was already married. They didn't marry until 8 years later when his first wife died.
I have looked for all Gardner/ Sorbie marriages - None.
Only one Elizabeth Sorbie birth 1885 Westmorland.
DOES the birth cert say mother Elizabeth Sorbie - sounds like they weren't married.

Was Arthur George actually married to Elizabeth Sorbie ?
Was he living with her ?
Can't see them on Ancestry. free bmd.

I recieved my grandmothers birth certificate today (she was Josephine Gardner born 30 061930 London) her parents are Arthur George Gardner and Elizabeth Sorbie. Her fathers occupation is a butler at 12 Harberton road, London.
I can't find any record of her parents anywere. Does anybody have any ideas were else to look?
