Teresa With Irish Blood in Me Veins

Teresa With Irish Blood in Me Veins Report 12 Sep 2010 19:26

Transcriptions of the 1881 Census is free on www.familysearch.org/
but no 'handwritten images' to check for errors..

You can see the 'handwritten images' on Ancestry for 1881 Census but of course not for free!

These genealogy sites get you, all ways!

God bless the Irish for putting the 1901 & 1911 Census on line for free..including the handwritten images!

Just a shame so many earlier ones were destroyed, although a few snippets are available elsewhere.

John's problem may be more to do with the way he is searching. The old adage that less search criteria, not more, is often better.

Whether or not GR 'hold' their own records or use a third party supplier is irrelevant. what matters most is what you get for your money and is it good value. If you stay in a two star hotel and pay two star prices you can't complain if the service isn't quite four star.

I have never subscribed to GR's Gold or Platinum service so I can't comment as to whether it is a 'rip off or not.' In making such claims you are treading on dangerous ground unless you have hard evidence to back it up.

And no, you cant see 1881 images for free anywhere. Only transcripts.

I have to agree with PigletsPal. Either Ancestry (which I prefer) or Findmypast offers much better value overall for research.

This is borne out by the number of Genes subscribers who have to ask for look-ups on either of these other two sites because they can't find what they are looking for on Genes.

I only have standard membership on here to allow me to post on the message boards and to make contact with family members through the "hot matches" (which although are not perfect do sometimes come up trumps).

PP - what's the big deal about who "holds" the records. If you wanted to buy a house, would you avoid estate agents who don't own the properties they're trying to sell you?

And whilst you're at it, where can I get free 1881 census images?

You would be better to have just the basic membership to Genes so that you can use these message boards but use something like Ancestry or FindMyPast websites to do research.

On Ancestry there are 19 births for the name John A. Blackmore after 1916.
