Hello everyone,

Can someone do a look up on the 1881 census for my grandad James Robert Gardiner born 1866 in Hull, Yorkshire. He would have been 15 years old. I have looked and cannot find him.
Thanks for help.

Hi Linda,

Is this the correct family in the 1871 census?

I notice that father was a sailor and that one of he brothers was born in America. Perhaps the family were out of UK. Have you found any of them?

Sorry about the delay in replying to you all but unfortunately I have been in hosopital for a week but now back home.
Firstly, I have found the family on the 1871, 1891 and thereafter. Someone mentioned the brother born in USA, this is one thing I have been trying to find out for years. I cannot imagine a brother of my grandad being born in USA but it clearly states this on two census returns.
It still leaves the question of the 1881 census. I think he must have been away on a ship working as I have tried everything to find him.
The funny thing is my grandmother whom he married in 1887 is also missing on the 1881 census. Her name was Jane Ann Elizabeth Robinson born Aldershot Hants 1868. I can find her in the 1871, 1891 and thereafter but again not on the 1881. Strange!!!

Thank you all for your help
I will just have to keep trying.

Hello Margaret,
Thank you for your reply.
My family are really dificult to find. Firstly, my great grandfather Francis Gardiner married Mary Johnson in Hull in 1850 and had at least 11 children. Most born in Hull. Francis was born in Knottingly and was previously married to Sarah Dyson who died in Hull in 1848.
ary Johnson was born in Hull the daughter of George Tindall Johnson.
After many years of tracing my family and coming up with 20 children for Francis and Mary I found that there was another Francis and Mary Gardiner living in Knottingly both having children of the same names and both having children in Hull and Knottingly. The Knottingly Francis and Mary were married in 1852 Mary's maiden name was also Johnson but her father was Thomas Johnson and she was born in Knottingly.

Even when I send for birth certs for the children I cannot prove they are my family. I do have the birth cert for my grandfather James Robert born 1867 and his death cert. I have seen all the census for both families and cannot separate them completely.
Thanks for all your help.
