so she was a cradle snatcher lol!!!!

it was in fact not at all uncommon for people not to marry. I dare to say that common-law marriages were at least as common as they are now .......... and for all the same reasons!

You mention the 1851 census. What about the 1861 and 1871 censuses?

Their first child was born in 1856, what evidence do you have of this?

How do you know that what you have found so far is actually the same family?

Yes Kath,

It says....

After Banns

Does the marriage certificate actually say that they were married after banns?

Yes I do have the marriage cert for 1875, but have been unable to find the banns to cover this marriage.

I can only see the banns from 1861.

Do you have the marriage certificate from 1875? Did the marriage take place after banns or could it have been by certificate or licence?

Hi Kath,

I thought the banns would have to be re-read, so will start looking for them nearer to 1875.

I have found, who I think is Eliza, in the 1851 census and she is living with her father and her daughter and is unmarried, (naughties went on then as well), she would only have been 19 at the time of this census.

I am sure we all suffer from the researchers form of "writers block" and minds tend to get so clogged it is difficult to think in a straight line.

Perhaps one of them was already married so they couldn't marry when they wanted to.

I would think that banns would have to be read again before the marriage in 1875 as I think (but am not sure) that banns only last for one year.

The marriage could have taken place away from where they lived because they had perhaps led people to believe they were already married so didn't want the marriage to take place in the place where they lived.

EDIT - just checked and the marriage has to go ahead within 3 months of the banns being published otherwise they have to be published again.

Henry Whitbread married Eliza Buller in !!!!!!!

BUT

Their first child was born in 1856 in West Ham (as were all their children) Henry was born in Aspley Guise, Beds. 1833, Eliza was born in Shotteswell, Warks, 1828. The family lived and stayed in the Plaistow/Canning Town areas for the rest of their lives. I am unable to find a marriage for Henry and Eliza prior to the birth of the first child.

The following banns for the marriage of a Henry Whitbread to an Eliza Buller were found in the records of All Saints Poplar, 12th/19th/26th May 1861, but a marriage did not take place until 1875 in a different church.

Question one.
Why such a delay into the relationship before the banns were called?

Question two
Why such a delay in the calling of the banns did the marriage take place?

Question three
Is it allowed for banns to be transfered between churches|?

Question four
Why would the marriage take place some three miles from where they lived?

Question five
Am I going down the wrong road?

Any thoughts/ideas very much appreciated
