Same problem with a UK record, except that there's 50+ jurisdictions that may hold the record, instead of just the 4 UK (and ex-UK) ones.

Go to http://www.cyndislist.com/
and look up the state, then "vital records" which is what they call BMDs (I'm assuming they're the records you're after - you didn't say), and follow the links. Several states use VITALCHEK to deal with credit card purchases.To avoid their fees, you could send a check from your US funds checking account (if you've got such an a/c) or ignore the "don't send cash" and send a mix of US travellers cheques and US cash.

However, there's not an economic means if you are really guessing, even for a most English records.

Does anyone know an economic means of obtaining US records. Have found a site VITALCHEK which wants to charge 52$ for one record....seems a lot if you are guessing.

Any more reasonable sources of this info available?
