There is no way you can get any details of an adopted person. Only the adopted person has the legal right to those details.

You can join the Adoption Contact Register there is a small fee for this (check out the GRO website for details) If the adoptee has joined the ACR they are notified and it's up to them if they wish contact.

Also, as a birth family member you can apply for contact through an intermediary. This can cost up to 1000 pounds with no guarantee of success. Check out the website adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk it's very informative.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Looks like it was a grand house at one time but fell into disrepair. Some history here.

There is other info about the house, mentioned in Peerage etc. Also an article from the Times.

Perhaps the ancestor was a housemaid or similar

If it says adopted, then yes they were adopted. With the house being so large my guess is that it may have been a mother and baby home, where unmarried mothers went, if it wasnt a maternity hospital.

it looks as if it is a house if you google you get this:

Arbour Hill, at Patrick Brompton, near Bedale, is on the market with Savills. The guide price for the four-bedroom main house, barns, stable block and seven acres is £975,000. More details on 01423-535-800.
