Bessie is a diminutive of Elizabeth, but I have several "Bessie"s in the family who were baptized as sutch.

My aunt's real name was Bessie and her twin sister Jessie!

It's usually short for Elizabeth but could also be a name in itself.
I ran into trouble looking for my grandmother's birth. She was known as Lizzie so naturally I was looking for Elizabeth. I found out that her name was Lizzie and not Elizabeth, she was baptised Lizzie, married as Lizzie and died as Lizzie.

I have a Bessie in my tree and it is her real name

it could also have been a nickname with absolutely no apparent connection to the "real" name.

I would say both a name in itself and also as Cathy says for Elizabeth.

Could anyone tell me what the name Bessie was used for or was it a name on its own please. Thankyou Spruce
