You can also check the indexes at various other places around the country - you don't have to go to Holborn to do it. This may not be the case with the very recent ones though - I'm not sure.

Local Archives offices often have the indexes - check with your local one for dates of coverage, and Probate Offices may have them - again, check with them first.

I remember a while ago someone posted that the Cardiff address was the best one.

Edit:
However, I understand that some other local ones are helpful, too :-)

Thanks to you all for your help.

I too emailed Nottingham Probate Office twice last year and they never even had the decency to relpy!
They obviously think they are above dealing with us famaily history addicts!!
Would think they would be happy for the £5 in todays climate!!
Looks like i will be better waiting a month or so then taking my chances with York.

Nottm Probate Office isn't a good one to apply to. A friend tried to apply there a couple of weeks ago and even though they shouldn't, they referred him to York.

I have just checked Derbyshire Records Office web site for you. They have wills up to 1928. Post 1928 wills are held at Nottingham Dristrict Probate Registry.

You could risk it, if you think she definitely left a will, and pay a Probate Office £5. If she didn't leave a will you won't get your £5 back but if she did, a copy will be provided for the £5. Don't apply to York Probate Office - apply to one of the smaller offices.

If you want to look at the Probate Index you could check with your local Archives to see if they have it or your local Probate office.

Ah, so thats why - she died dec 1941 so i bet she's not on the calendar!
My next question - how do i find the calendars/wills for after 1941?

Thanks for your help!

If she died in December, it would take a little while for it to be proved perhaps and so miss the 1941 inclusion.

I think they only go up to 1941, so maybe she died after the cut off period.

Hi,
can anyone clear this up for me ? -
I am trying to find my great grandmother - Maud Westlake's will. she died on 1st dec 1941 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
i know that she definatly left a will, because there were agruments over it's content!
But i can't find her on the national probate calendar index on Ancestry?
Any suggestions?
Did all wills go onto this index ?
Thanks Louise
