TROUBLE WITH ACCESS TO THE IGI SITE

Many thanks Mark. This makes sense to my non computer literate brain, with easy to follow instructions.

Ok, Clicking the Start Button brings up the Windows Start Menu on. At the top is a short list of programs that have been bookmarked by the system. The top left one is usually Internet Explorer. You have clicked on this and this brings you up your home page which is probably set to whatever your ISP (Internet Service Provider) has set it to. If you have BT then it is a BT-Yahoo home page which as you say gives you access to chat and email.

So your internet is working fine.

At the top of internet explorer there is an address bar that starts with http://. Delete whatever is in there and paste this link in

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp

This takes you straight to the FamilySearch IGI search page. Once you have the IGI page up, right-click in the white space on the right and select "Add to Favorites..." to bookmark the page. The favourites list can then be accessed by clicking the "*Favorites" button.

FamilySearch have a new 'in-development' pilot search site that has more information on it and can be accessed at

http://pilot.familysearch.org/

Try this one and bookmark it too.

Hello Inspector Green Pen
When I click on start, I then put the cursor to the top of the screen and click on the first one on the list to connect me to the internet. That brings up a front page where I can click onto e-mails. Then at the side, there is a list of options, and I click onto Chat.
I know, all sounds abit convaluted.

Julia,

Is your problem one of connecting and staying connected to the Internet, rather than with a particular site? When you say you have to go to 'Start' what exactly are you selecting and clicking on at that point?

HavenĀ“t had trouble getting into the site but when I try to search, keep getting an error message.
This has been going on since they did a site maintenance late last week.
If I page back & press search again, it almost always gives me the page I want.

Yes Slartib it is together, but I still have to click Start to get connected.
Elizabeth, I already have it in my address bar, as I do many others, and just type the beginning of the address, and it comes up. However, when i manage to get through to the IGI, it says Page not Available, so I have to restart again, getting back into GR.

When you do get through to IGI add it to Favourites. I have dozens of recommended sites under the name Genealogy of which I only use a few, but can't bring myself to delete any of the others just in case!

Whether I try to access the IGI site through the address bar, or google it, I am having trouble gaining access. On the few occassions I have been able to, when getting back to GR site, I have to click on the START tab, at the bottom left hand side of computer.
I am not very computer literate, and do not know all the lingo, but, any suggestions please.
