FTM 2010 - How to show a first marriage?

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

I have known for some time that my 3xg.grandfather (Thomas Lott) was married twice, the 2nd time to a widow (Dinah Cole) . Her son George then married his daughter Mary Ann, which means that I am descended from both of Dinah's husbands.

I had the details of the 2nd marriage, which was on my FTM tree. My problem is that I have recently found details of his first wife and marriage and have added this as a fact, although it does not seem to allow a name to be inserted. Dinah is showing as Mary Ann's mother and I have not been able to change it. Can some kind person explain to me (in very simple terms!) where I am going wrong?

On FTM 2006 you creat another spouse and then get asked if the children already listed are for that marriage which you click No

Hi Shirley

that sound simple enough, but how do I create another spouse?

For FTM2010

Go to the main page that shows parents and children listed beneath.

On the male parent boxed area there is a small box top right hand side (with a female head). Click on this.

You then have 'add spouse' click on that and away you go!

After you have added the spouse click on the same box and you can then set the spouse order.

Thank you both - I think I might have done it, although I haven't managed to marry Mary Ann back to George yet!

By your posting it looks as if you will then need to sort out the children as to who belongs to who...

To do this you need to use the add/detach function found under the 'Person' tab.

For a step to step guide on how to do this go to....

http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=g1IdCFak

and put 'attach child' in the search box. Answers 1 and 3 will cover what you need.

Bless you - I think I might have to have a coffee break first though - I have thoroughly confused myself! Will sit down again more calmly later and follow your instructions to the letter!

"to marry Mary Ann back to George"

Using the person tab...

Click on Add/detach person

Then click on 'Attach Spouse'

A Brandy may be better.....But perhaps not until you have it sorted :-) ...Then as a reward!!!

Well!! on FTM 2006 you have the male and his wife on screen .On his side you click on the box under his details that says spouses,a box come up that shows his spouse and also has a box that say create new spouse which you click on and add the name. it then asks if you want to connect the children posted to the new spouse which you say no , this keeps them in the right family group. You can then add any children that the marriage had for the other spouse

Yes it was so much easier on 2006.

I used 2006 until this year and then upgraded to 2010 and some of the 2006 functions were/are easier.

Don't get me started on the reports!!!!

Well yes you can!...I do so miss the customised report option and I now have to export from 2010 to 2006 to get customised reports.

If the OH hadn't bought 2010 for me I would be happily using 2006.

Having said that there is one big advantage to 2010 if you have it linked to Ancestry....The websearch feature takes you to the Ancestry 'start' page so you can select the criteria for search. It then gives the usual breakdown of where the names appears in the records and you can then select, choose and then add records.

I got soooo frustrated with the 2006 websearch.....Their search hardly ever found 'my' person and then having to go through numerous pages to find them for each entry (1841,51,ect) I needed. I then found it easier to directly search on Ancestry to find the entry I wanted then replicate that on 2006 to find it again to add it!!

So much easier as a 'One Stop Shop'

Should I think myself lucky then? Now OH has come in, I have decided to start afresh tomorrow. I find I deteriorate later in the day now!

Thanks to your help, I am confident I can sort this out now.
