Actually, if I could just add how inappropriate it was for Joan to put the personal info of *someone else* in her post, i.e. the full names in the header. Maybe the thread could just be deleted now.

And in fact, Minnie, the "guidelines for message board use" say: ... well, I would quote them, but when I click on "Before posting, please read the guidelines for message board use." under this box, I get taken to my default home page, so I can't. They do say not to post personal info including email addresses on the boards.

The management's reason for saying this is so that users cannot contact other users without paying fees to this site.
That's the management's lookout, and I don't care. I advise not to do it for safety, security and privacy reasons, myself.

Sylvia, warn Joan by all means. I quite often see ''its against GR Rules'' What GR rules actually say is

''We advise that you never reveal via the Genes Reunited Service any personal information about yourself or anyone else (for example: telephone numbers, home addresses or email addresses) which you do not want to be visible to third parties''

Dear All

If I knew who Mary was, I would contact her direct. Also the other problem is that David was born under another name and I didn't know who he was seeking although I did search these boards.

Thank you everyone for concerns over spam etc. In the 10 plus years I have been helping people and posting my personal info on the net I have never had any problems. Maybe it is what is posted that the spammers pick up on.

Minnie

I do know who Joan is

but many of us spend our time warning people about not putting private addresses on here

so why should Joan be any different?

In addition, I was shaken the other day to discover how fast information from on GR threads can be found on Google

............. it took less than 2 hours from when I made a posting on a thread asking for information to finding the thread on Google!

The problem is, will Mary, whoever she is, see any of this?

Joan, you might really do better to send a PM. ;)

For those who don't know, and obviously it's not meant to be a secret so why not say? -- Joan is known for working hard to find family info for adopted children, and publishes her contact details on the net.

In any event, a gmail (or hotmail) email address that is *not* a person's real name doesn't disclose anything and the only risk is a flood of spam.

Joan want to be indentified & contactable.

If you know who Joan is ( And GR do) you'd now why she puts it.

When you move home, or better still before you move, I suggest you change your e-mail address. It is listed on google from here and also on Bulletin Boards website.. and when you do, don't publish it.

Joan

please PLEASE remove your email address ad other personal information

This is NOT a safe site ...... and is acknowledged as such by GR, who state in their T&Cs that home email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, and any other identifying means shoudl not be posted on the open boards.

You may well find that this posting is on Google within minutes of your posting ..... which means that you have spread your contact information to all and sundry.

I'm not kidding!

For Mary, thanks for passing my details on to David. He left a message on my answerphone with a mobile number for response. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to ring mobiles. I must mention here that the website address is still OK as is my telephone number at present. My email address is now [email protected]

The telephone number will change in the next month as I will be moving home.
