Choccy sorry, that one is not the right Eleanor.

My relation was born December 1816 to William (Wm) and Amy (Amey) at Cranford St Andrew, Northamptonshire.

maybe we should now be answering this question on the other thread. thread:124 1827

Well, if you tell us where she was born it won't hurt to have another look.

this happened at Cranford St Andrew Northamptonshire.
And Martha was working as a servant at The Hall.

she went on to marry as Martha.
yes I know its all speculation, so I'd love to find the real facts, and I dont mind in the least if theories are disproved and replaced with facts,

Have you asked people on here to have a look just in case we can find her? IGP is right, you have to be really careful - I have ancestors where another family matches almost 100% for names and birthplaces for example. So easy to go astray.

Interesting theories but be careful not to get too carried away without any hard facts. Not to say that you shouldn't explore all possibilities but do keep an open mind until you can find more conclusive proof.

Over the years, many members on here have tried to come up with similar suggestions to make the information they have found 'fit' only to have them blown clean out of the water when a fresh pair of eyes takes a look.

Don´t know where all this took place, but as Eleanor/Martha was working as a servant, it´s possible that her employer didn´t approve of a servant having a "posh" name & made her answer to Martha,or maybe their previous servant was called Martha & they couldn´t be bothered to remember a new name.
Both possibilities were quite common.

For those looking for absent records I would like to post a solution I happened upon about the absence of any further records for a person baptized Eleanor Lyon 1816.

in the 1841 census she was not in her father's household, but there was no death or marriage. No records anywhere as Eleanor.
I decided to search the 1841 census using only the family name, year of birth and location.
The only match among quite a few males and females for the same year and location, was a Martha working as a servant in the town where the Lyon family lived.
Looking at the 1841 census image I found Martha was the same age and same birthplace as Eleanor.

Then looked for a marriage of a Martha Lyon b.1816 of that location (knowing that most marriage records have the bride's father's name)
Martha married in that same location and father's name Wm.
there are no other Marthas in that family.

Eleanor's father's name was Wm.
A reasonable explanation was that Eleanor changed her name to Martha and that they are one and the same person.

A twist to the story being that Eleanor's father's second wife's name was also Eleanor.
So my guess is that she didn't want to be confused with the second wife.

Im going to use this method again for a few other missing persons on my tree.
