There's a closure of 100/75/50 y on the cheap online B/M/D images. If you need something more recent (like your dad's b.cert). then you can order a certified extract (that's what they call them) thru SP. I don't know if they certify an image of the rego, like the GRO now does - the only recent ones I have were gotten in the pre-SP, pre-imaging days, and are hand-written copies of the regos thru the local Aberdeen rego office.

There are 5 parishes on the Island of Lewis and Harris, namely:
86 Barvas ROC, 87 Lochs ROC, 88 Stornoway ROC, 89 Uig ROC, 111 Harris INV.
FreeCEN has transcribed them all in 1841, but only 86(part) & 88 in 1851.

Ancestry has partial transcriptions 1841-1901, but no images. Images cost abt 1 GBP per image thru SP.

To cut down the cost at SP, it's worth checking the IGI first:

One can look up batch #s at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

but most Scottish batch #s have the form C11pppn or M11pppn, where ppp is the parish # (left padded with zeros if needed).
For GROS index (1855-1875ish), n=1 or 3. If it's a small parish, then they might not use 3, but if they split it into 2 batches, the usual breakdown is 1=1855-1867, 3=1868-1875. Similarly, if n=2 won't cover everything pre 1855, they'll use n=4,5,6, etc. (This fails for the bigger cities, so after n=9, Aberdeen starts using a spare parish # (actually 3 of them).

It's still worth checking IGI's submitted records, but I prefer to do the extracted ones first. The trouble with submitted records is you've no way of easily evaluating the quality of the research behind the record. These can be poor (and have cost me money checking them out), but on the other hand, one enabled me to find 5 of my g gran's aunts.

I have no census information or certs for any of these people. My father Hugh Macdonald, of Stornoway (born on Kenneth st) was the second youngest of a large family. Some 30 years ago I met most of his siblings. All my information came from them, along with some wonderful family stories.
Their names were John Macdonald, 1876-1945, from Beauly (in Ross and Cromarty county) (nicknamed "Johnnie The Factory") and, Catherine Isabella MacKenzie, 1880-1951. Her family was moved to Stornoway during the Isle of Lewis clearances. Granda moved to Stornoway with his sister Annie and 2 uncles -prior to 1903. Gran and granda lived at 23 Matheson Road, where they had 7 chiildren.
Granda sister, Annie MacDonald married granma's brother William MacKenzie (no dates). Granda and his uncles owned the Royal Hotel, the Crown Hotel, and a lemonade factory which they later turned into The Criterion Bar(still there today).
Granda's parents were Hugh MacDonald of Beauly and Ann Matheson of Dingwall (no dates).
Granma's parents were William MacKenzie and Cristina Macdonald(no dates),
her grandparents were:
paternal-Alex MacKenzie (Bayhead then Stornoway) & Jessie Morrison(no dates)
maternal-Alex MacDonald (Steinish) & Barbara MacKenzie
(Oronsay-i think).
Granma's great grandparents were:
maternal-William MacKenzie & Catherine Campbell.
