If they gave birth in a hospital, they may hold records of the disposal. It may be worth your friend asking.
edit - although Rutlandbelle thinks it unlikley

It may depend how far into the development the baby was, as to whether it was classified as a miscarriage or near term still birth. (which ties in with Slartibartfast's info)

In either case, it may open up old emotional wounds. Hope they are prepared for that. :(

Allison I don't think so. I was a midwife and fortunately when I worked we were a bit more sensitive about stillbirths.

50 yrs ago the baby would have been cremated or even buried in another grave with someone else. The mother would be told nothing. If the baby was born in hospital the hospital social worker may be able to help or tell you what happened to stillbirths at that time. The local authority may have had a stillbirth plot but I would be very surprised.

I know you want to help your friend but I think you are on an impossible journey.

Couldn't she go to the nearest church to where the baby died and light a candle.

hi there,
thanks for that. Do you know if they child was registered, they would be able to tell where they were buried or at least ashes scattered.
thanks

Hi there,
Looking on behalf of someone. They lost their child some 50 years ago and never knew what happened to them. Did these children get cremated or buried in a still birth plot.
thanks
