For English research it pays to have a subscription to a site like Ancestry or Findmypast.

The website for ordering certificates from the GRO:-

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Wow, thanks, that sounds really promising. When I tried looking at the death records there were so many, and it would have cost me a fortune to look at every entry.

His name was Henry Galloway Herd and he was born in Scotland on 5th April 1893. He died between 1955 and 1970 (60's probably) in England, possibly Basingstoke.

As long as his name isn't John Smith then someone should be able to help if you want to give us the details.

Hi, I only have a rough idea of when my grandfather died, how can I trace his death certificate? I have his birth certificate and family details.
