This topic comes up at least once a month, in fact it was last up only a few days ago.

There is technically, no concept of a Lapsed Member on GR. However, there could be a number of reasons why members no longer access the site. For example:-

* They have more important things to do with their life.
* They have changed their email no and are unaware that they have a message
* No longer bother with the site or have forgotten their log-in details
* Are ill, on are holiday
* Have died
* Only log on infrequently. I have a contact who logs on only once a year.....!

Have you checked if they have read your message? If they have then it might be worth sending a follow up, if not then I'm afraid there is not a lot you can do.

On checking my Sent Messages I have 15 unread going back to the beginning of September, and a further 26 unread going back to the start of 2010, so you are not alone.

I have been a paying member since Jan but it tells me I have been a member since 2007. I think as long as you do not change your email address you should still recieve a message.
I sent one to my ex husband when I noticed he had my name and place of birth wrong!!! he recieved it and replied and I dont think he has ever paid to use this site.

Hello Elizabeth.

A lot of members on GR also have their family tree on Ancestry. Have you taken a look there?

Not sure if you have to have a subscription on Ancestry to view trees. If you don't have one, pm me the name on your tree and I will see if it there.

Discretion assured.

Hi
would I be right in thinking a persons "tree" remains on the system even if the person is no longer an active member? If this is so then that tree could be providing GR with my "hot matches" sooooo if that person had died then I could be sending messages with no-one to answer them!!

Like you I have a few not answered, one inparticular is important to me and I have sent three messages which have stubbornly remained purple!!!!! its so frustrating.

You can see if your message has reached the recipient if you look at your sent box. If the icon next to the message is mauve then it hasn't been looked at yet. It doesn't mean that they have actually read it.

Dear All

Hello

Thank you very much for your quick and helpful replies.

I gotcha about the membership numbers and I could not agree more with the comments about showing when a member last visited the site.

Now all I need is the message replies!
Patience!

Thanks all, your help is always appreciated.

Take care of yourselves.
Very best wishes

Morning EOS.

Basically, the longer the person has been a member, the lower their number......that's assuming they haven't more than one account!

By hovering my mouse over your name I can see that your membership number is

9688361

RutlandBelle's is

325426

As her number is lower than yours, she joined before you.

There is a general consensus of opinion that it would be handy if there was a feature showing when someone last logged in, or added to their tree. At least then we wouldn't be gnashing our teeth and waiting in vain!

Edit - what SomersetGirl said! lol

Most people don't stay members very long, and there's no way of knowing how long ago the tree you want has been visited, unlike ancestry.

Dear All

Hello

Hope you are well and doing okay.

I have sent off several messages to see if there are links for research, using the GR search tree and contact facility.

If I am right, then I could have located ancestors which have so far been elusive.

How do you know when a membership is a very old one or relatively new, as I don't understand the numbering allocation for membership.

Can you help please?

Thank you for your help.
