It's my understanding that my great grandmother was born out of wedlock in a well-to-do family and as such was 'given' to another relative to be raised to avoid family shame . . . how would I begin to search my grea grandmother's history - her birth record shows no mother's name. I am new to this site and am not sure where to go from here. Would she have had to be registered to her parents or to the new guardian? Any help or tips would be really appreciated.

Do you have a copy of the birth certificate, and if so can you please state what is recorded on it.

No, not at this stage. I only have the information given by this website, that confirms her birth in Fulham is recorded in vol.1a, page 237 - means nothing to me. How would I go about obtaining her birth certificate - the local records office I guess?? If you can point me in the right direction that would be great.

You can search births ( and marriages and deaths) up to about 1935 on this link.

It is free.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Before 1911 mother's maiden names are not shown on the index. The full details will be on a birth certificate though.
You can apply for them online quite easily here.....

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You have to register and use a password, but that can be used for any subsequent orders.
Cost is £9.25 each certificate.
