...as those with a Walters surname can be known!

I'm struggling to find my Gt Gt Grandad, William Walters, when he was young and I wondered if anyone could help? He is easily found in 1901 living with his family in Newton St Loe, Somerset. He gives his age as 62 and says that he is a farm labourer and army pensioner and that he was born in Farmborough Somerset. This comes under the Clutton district. That there is no sign of him in several previous censuses can probably be explained by his being in the army. However, I can find no trace of him on the 1851 or 1841 censuses when I would have presumed he would still be living at home if his parents were still alive. Neither can I find his birth. I would dearly like to go back another generation so if any of you clever people out there could find his birth or census entries I would be very grateful. I have tried looking for Walter, Waller and a few other variations.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello, no I don't have a marriage certificate and I've not found the marriage either. Annie Elizabeth's maiden name was Hill though and she was from Newton St Loe.

Interesting about his age on the 1891 census - he's 2 years older according to this - perhaps I ought to widen the age range further to that I've been searching for.

Thanks

2 years isn't much - I've widened by 5 years but as I say there are several possibles unfortunately. Maybe a marriage search is the way to go?

Yes sorry, silly of me not to think of that - because I already knew Annie's name was Hill I didn't really think about searching for the marriage.

What about this one? I see he was a lot older than Annie - I wonder if he might have been married previously.

Yes I would say that's them, the names match and I know that there was an illegitimate child so that would be 12 year old Alice on the 1891 census.

Thanks
