Hmmm, I guess it depends on the country. Whether ordered or not I've always had copies of the originals.

The microfilms that you can order through your LDS are original images of the parish records. The microfiche that they already have at the centres are transcribed.

The microfilms/fiche I've viewed at CLDS have been actual photographed copies of the parish registers with the curate's or clergymen's comments. Such as weather conditions, visiting dignataries, and unknown soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars dying, frozen in a ditch outside the village.

However not all are so chatty. The earlier records seem to be better for that.

Are you saying the the LDS fiches are fiches of transcriptions, and not of the original records? So additional info in the original records, e.g. witneses of a marriage, won't show on an LDS fiche?

LDS have films of parish registers. Have a look at their catalogue for the parish you're interested in. Looking at a film/fiche of the IGI is surely just what can be seen online - i.e not actual images.

Thanks Kay???? that is exactly what I wanted to know. I'd rather see the actual register images so guess it's a trip to Stafford.

Thank you for the reply.

Cheers, Vicki

LDS centres can get PRs in for you if prior notice is given...,those Ive looked at at LDSC on fiche IGI are just extracted information and not what you see on fiche at a RO / Archive where they have images of the actual register.

Hi everyone
Just a 'dumb' question - would the viewable microfiche records available at my nearest LDS centre (Nottingham) be identical to those at my nearest local records office (Stafford)? Would it be listed in the same way, are the LDS records actual facsimiles of what the parish records contain?
Am ashamed to say that I have not visited either yet - but Nottingham is nearer. What would anyone advise?

Thanks in advance,

Vicki
