This is why birth certificates state on the bottom that the cert is not proof of identity. But what do all official sources ask for?...

If that is the case, then no wonder identity theft is so prevalent.

This requirement applies to on-line ordering.

Give them a ring to explain the situation and they may be willing to take your order over the phone, or alternatively speak to the Register Office where the birth was originally registered.

i recently tried online to order from the GRO a birth certificate of an ancestor who was born about 30 years ago. I was asked to input a lot of information which I did not have - indeed it was that information I was wanting! My attempt to order with just the usual limited information was refused with a message that if the birth was within the last 50 years then it was necessary that full information was given. Is this a very new requirement? Is it an attempt to prevent identity theft?
