Just realised that their oldest son Thomas wasnt at home in 1901, so i think thats probably the next thing to sort out, try and find him under either Hill or Aldred...oh the joys!!

Dawn

Dawn Report 20 Oct 2010 20:33

Witness on certificate are Mary Alice Cooke and Tom Barker. Tom Barker was Esthers brother so thats an easy one but i dont know who Mary Alice Cooke is??

It is a strange one this..............so iIF he is Walter ALDRED and not HILL...timeline says that up to marriage he was ALDRED then for some reason changed his name to hill, but put THOMAS as his father. Just going to read through the thread again

EDIT.........dont forget lots of people married after the event of children!
Do you have the witness names??

Dawn

Dawn Report 20 Oct 2010 20:14

Just found a marriage for a Thomas Aldred and a Mary Parker in Mansfield in 1880 which would make Walter aged 2. Thomas Aldred couldnt of been Walters natural father his real father must of died and Mary his mother remarried Thomas and he brought him up as his own. Still doesnt really explain why Walter used the surname Hill on his marriage certificate though when he was brought up with the surname of Aldred, just to change it back again in 1911. xx

dawn,

Walter is not with them in 1901.............who were the witnesses on the marriage cert...........maybe a lead there?

Hiya,
Yeah i was just coming on here to post the same thing, its the same in the 1891 census they are all down as the Aldred surname on there as well. I think i'm going to have fun looking into this one nd finding where the surname hill came into it...will update this post if i find anything furtherxx

Hi Dawn,

No!!!!!!!!!!! wish I had. I have a problem with a scottish birth of my G.Dad 1889...............his name was John Anderson Martin..........there is NO John Anderson Martin born in Scotland 1888+/- 3 !!! but that is another story.

So back to your scenario..........Walter Hills father was Thomas Aldred as named on Walters marriage cert...........was Thomas alive at time of the marriage?

Who did Thomas marry?

Dawn

Dawn Report 20 Oct 2010 19:25

Hi Ann
Walter Hills father is named asThomas Aldred, i thought it was a bit strange when i received the certificate last week but hadnt had time to look into properly. You said you have heard of this scenario before, did you find any reason why this happens?

**Ann**

**Ann** Report 20 Oct 2010 19:16

Hi Dawn,

I have come across this scenario before........and oh to be a fly on the wall!

Named as in Thomas Aldred or Thomas Aldred Hill?

First of all thankyou all for replying.
This is a real strange one, somersetgirl that is the correct family i have them in 1901 already, the 1911 census is real interesting as on Walter and Esther Hills marriage certificate Walters dad is named as Thomas Aldred?? I think i had better have a look on the 1911 census a bit more closely and try and work this out...why on earth would thy call themselves Aldred and not Hill??

Hi all
I dont post much on here but i was hoping some kind peson could possibly help me out with a family lookup on the 1911 census. I have a esther hill married to walter hill on the 1901 census with their 3 week old son John H Hill living on Blackwell Rd Notts, Walter is a miner, but i cannot for the life of me find any of them in 1911, i do have access to the 1911 census but am getting nowhere and i was hoping a second pair of eyes could maybe have a look for me.
Thanks in advance
Dawn
