I got 3 inquest reports from local libraries. I e-mailed the local studies officer at the appropriate library (Bridgend and Lincoln). I gave as much detail as I could from death certs etc and both libraries found reports in local papers which they sent to me. One did not charge the other only for the photopcopy.

To get the right library I just 'googled' and as you have the death cert you should have place of death so can narrow down your search.

good luck

Hi all just to keep you posted, have tried and still cannot find what I am looking for, I am going to ring the Lancs record office this week to see if some kind soul will have pity on me and do some checking, can't visit at the moment as we live in East Yorkshire.
For info, what I am looking for is the inquest on Joseph Callon which was held on 11th October 1879, he had been found dead on his milk cart the previous day !! (a bit like Ernie, who drove the fastest milk cart in the west??) The coroner was C.E. Driffield for Lancashire who provided the death cert to the registry. I have the copy death cert.
Thanks again. M.

not always the easiest of sites to find the appropriate search key

date limit by putting something like 'after sept 1879' and just put in the surname of the person

you can then use the LH column to reduce no of hits by selecting 'news' or 'people'.

'people' tends to be mainly BMD's so I would try 'news' first

Hi all, many thanks for your replies will try them all out!!!!
I did follow Jonesys suggestion and have actually joined Lancashire Library, but, and that is a big but, I don't think I would ever make a good researcher, cos I did not get very far but will keep trying.
Will keep you all posted. cheers M

you could also try the newspaper lookup on line if you have access to lancashire libraries

see jonesey's thread on access to newspapers

if you do not have access I - and many others - do if you want to put more detail on here or send me a pm

I was able to find a newspaper report on the death and inquest on my gt gt grndfather by contacting the Oldham Local Studies and Archives Centre

I gave them the information I had gained from the death certificate ..... date of death, date of coroner's inquest, name of person, place of death, and name of coroner

A volunteer checked all their newspaper holdings ...... and found a report in a very short lived newspaper of the time.

She emailed me back, asked for my mailing address, copied the report (2 long columns that were printed on 2 pages), and then airmailed it to me

all for no charge!

so ........ google for the town where the death and inquest took place, and see if they have a Local Studies and Archives Centre!!

Hi
Lancashire Records Office has good online records. Go to the site, click on 'Records Search' then on 'LANCAT'. Use the search box in the top right corner & put in the name of the person and the word inquest. You might be lucky. You won't get the full report but there may be a verdict.
The LRO are very helpful & if you 'phone them they may be able to tell you the best Library to contact for potential Newspaper reports on the inquest.

hi Wellybobs,

I was able to obtain a copy of an inquest held in Birmingham in 1878 from Birmingham central library. I rang to see if someone would check the local paper for a report and was offered a copy of the inquest report instead. Perhaps you could contact the library local to where the inquest was held. you never know you may be lucky.

Hi Wellybobs.
Reports of coroners inquests are very difficult to find because to a great extent, they havenĀ“t survived. If the one you are looking for exists, it will probably be in the Records Office for the place where the death occurred.
You could always try the local newspaper to see if there is a report on the inquest. They usually were reported. I have found 2 of mine that way.
