Does anyone know whether insanity would have been grounds for divorce in the 1890s.
My g grandmother´s sister appears on the 1891 census with her husband, but appears to have re married in 1893.
I assumed her husband had died, but he is on the 1901 census in a "lunatic asylum" & didn´t die until 1902.
Did they divorce or was her marriage bigamous?

Divorce up until 1858 was only granted by a private act of parliament, and would of cost a lot of money, see the following guide on divorce:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/divorce.htm

I think her marrigae was bigamous!

Hi Paul.
They didn´t get married until 1874 & had 7 children between then & 1890. Any divorce would have taken place between 1890 & 1893.
