This thread has reminded me of an old Joke.

Every Friday a young lad was sent by his mother to collect the 10/- maintainence money from his father.

On the occasion of the lad's 16th birthday his father handed over the usual 10/- and said, "You can tell your mother that now you are 16 I'm not your father any more."

The lad duly told his mother what his father had said.

"Right", said the mother, "You go right back and tell him that he never was."

If there is no fathers name on the birth cert you might not get his name on his marriage cert

Bastardy bond or to give it its proper name an Order of Affiliation certainly existed in 1913 so if the mother petitioned for one the records may exist. The general rule being that application had to be made within 12 months of the birth.

Handsworth is a little bit odd. It was indeed part of West Bromwich at that time but now it is part of Birmingham. If the mother did apply for maintainence then the application would have been heard at the petty session of the local court.

The Sandwell archive office does hold some court records for the area. It might pay to give the office a ring or send them an email to see if they can advise and help.
