I have finally found a marriage certificate for my x 3 grandfather who was called William Clarke aged 20 at time of marriage in 1864 in Nottingham. His wife Ann Radford aged 20 has always gone by the name of Taylor (on the births of her children and her death was Taylor), I traced her correct name after advise from members here to try ordering her nephews cert and found his father was listed as Radford Taylor, so it was of no surprise to find that fathers name was listed as John Taylor (not sure if he is biological one) but fathers name for William Clarke is a Thomas Kirk (labourer), please can anyone make sense of this for me and offer any advise on where to try next to trace birth of William Clarke because I have found Ann Radfords and just waiting for certificate. Thank you.

Thanks for that, on all the other certs I have William never has a middle name but it is something I will check up on, all the first names are repeatedly used though, thank you very much for your time.

William was probably born in 1843, prior to the marriage of Thomas Kirk and Ann Clark(e). Have you tried to find his birth cert - probably under the name Clark(e) in the Jun / Sep / Dec qtrs?

Just out of curiosity, if Thomas Kirk was his father as listed on marriage certificate and he brought him up from birth why would he use Clarke and not Kirk as his surname. From the length of time I have been doing this (not very long just a few years) they change their names to suit and call themselves whatever they want.

Angela

re his place of birth

he might well not have known that he was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire

If you look at where he was living with his grandparents on that 1851 Census, it is Firbeck and Letwell, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

if that is where he grew up, then he could quite well have asusmed that is where he was born.

You also ask "Just out of curiosity, if Thomas Kirk was his father as listed on marriage certificate and he brought him up from birth why would he use Clarke and not Kirk as his surname."

There is no evidence so far that Thomas raised him ..... he's with his Clarke grandparents on the 1851.

so he might well have known the NAME of his father, but never known his father, if you see what I mean!

I have a child born to a John Reid and Anne Baggott (who never married)- who always used the name Baggott, another born to an Elizabeth Beecroft and John Buckingham - parents married after his birth - who uses whichever name suits him!
My own grand daughter has a double barelled surname, daughter never married her father - (eg)
Ann Smith-Jones, My daughter has since married and grand daughter would like to have her stepfather's name - so she will be (eg) Ann Smith-Jones-Brown.
As long as she doesn't intend defrauding people my grand daughter can use any one, two or all of her surnames.
It's actually more difficult to change your forename than your surname,

Thank you so much for helping me, I would have really struggled and possibly gave up the search for this family line without all your kind help and extensive knowledge not to mention you taking time out to help.
