My grandfathers paternal line has caused me nothing but headaches. I am unable to find the family in the 1871 census.

Robert Roberts, born about 1846 in the Liverpool area
Mary Roberts born in 1851 in Kirkby
Their daughter Mary Ellen born about 1870 in the Liverpool/Bootle area

Are some records missing or have I just not looked hard enough??

Many thanks for your contribution to finding my great grandfather, sadly the info for the 1881 census is not him.

I have managed to track down and verify with certs. John Roberts wife Mary, my great grandmother, but the only thing I have in the way of info on John Roberts is his marriage cert. and the birth cert of my grandfather.

The marriage cert for 1868 gives John Roberts occupation as "Carter". And the birth cert for his son, also called John, is again, Carter.

John seniors father is recorded on the marriage cert as Robert Roberts, "Mariner".

John Roberts is still alive at the time of the 1881 census as his wife Mary is not recorded as a widow,

The only evidence I do have that John Roberts existed is his marriage cert to my great grandmother and the birth cert for my grandfather.

He is out there somewhere in 1871 and 1881, but where????
