Have you looked here?

http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/
(Cheshire parish register project)

Of course, even if you find a baptism, it won't find his mother's maiden name, which is presumably what you are after. BUT - they may have a matching marriage!

As my internet is on a go slow, I haven't looked - sorry

When I rang the bury st edmunds register office with the same problem, they said to include a letter with any info I had and if it didn't match they would return my cheque. Maybe if you know which office you could call and ask if they would do the same, using fathers name as a reference.
It's worth a try

You could try on a free parish recs site if you know fathers name, and that might tell give you a more exact date?

How can I set about "choosing" which one is mine.

I am looking for the birth of a John Roberts, born about 1840 and registered in Great Broughton, Cheshire. There are 20 in this district falling betweenh 1839 and 1843, and I have no other info to go on.
