Good for you for thinking to search the NA and A2A, even though you were unsuccesfull. ...I wouldn't have found my Hampstead ancestor searching the A2A by name as the poor law record hasn't been indexed by individual name just by the Union name.

I would start with where the first child was born. Could this be the mother's home parish? Many first time mothers went home to their own mum/married sister to give birth.
If it was her home parish then it is possibile they married there and the marriage record may then provide clues.

If nothing comes from searching the registers and records of the first born's parish then it would mean moving on to child two, three ect and each time repeating the search.

I wish you the best of luck

Chris

hi chris,
as far as i am aware he was a brick maker/layer...
I have tried puttin his name into access2archives and national archives, with no luck..i had hoped he may have done some kingd of apprentiship..
would it be worth me going to the local rec office of where he lived last then? and asking to see any kind of record that you have mentioned? although i have no idea if he was born there or if and when he moved there? i do know they lived in other places from births of children, so should i do that?
thank you for advice

Could your ancestors have needed help from the parish? If so then Poor Law records can be very useful.

In Hampstead, Middlesex my ancestor applied for relief and over a series of applications I found 'bits' of info. The most important being that he had earned his right of settlement in the parish by employment and he stated where he had been born. This wasn't in a settlement examnation just in the day to day records kept by the Overseers.

So it is always worth looking at parish records as well as parish registers.

Parish records will be in the relevant record office and most have an online catalogue you can explore to see what is available.

Good luck
Chris

Hi,
I know this is no consolation but I have a similar problem, I have a relative on 1841 and 1851 census plus a death cert, but its as though they came from under the gooseberry bush !!!! Its so frustrating.
Keep hunting....good luck. M.

Could someone please help me to go any further back on my tree?
my 6xg grandfather is proving elusive. I have him in 41 census, and i have his death cert. I have been advised to go sideways as much as poss to try to find other family to help locate him, which has drawn a blank. I been thru thousand of parish recs, and although there are possibles, i have no links to prove.
I have posted threads before to see if others can find him, to no avail.
could anyone please suggest what i can do now, places to look, clues to look for, any suggestions at all welcome
kind regards
kim
