You don't say in what context you have come across the letters, so it is hard to give better help. But to add to the background, I joined what is now BT shortly after it started being broken away from the government (when it was part of the Post Office). The stationary cupboard still contained lots of envelopes showing the OHMS wording. So many government departments could have used this.

Thank you everyone for taking the trouble to reply. I will pass all this on to my friend.

Thanks again

Depending on the year this was used it could be On HIS Majesty's Service. Any chance he was a courier for the diplomatic corps?

I think that this (OHMS) was used on any government official mail.

My apprenticeship indentures produced by the then Ministry of Works
had this emblazoned across the top of the A4 sized Khaki envelope that was posted in 1958, and has a crown encircled, with the words"Official Paid ", in place of a stamp.

but likely ANY government office would have used it also

Bob

these days I think that each department goes its own way........DVLA, HMRC Etc.

Hi Tetley

Could it be he was in the Army, or one of other services, On Her/His Majesty's Service?? We always used to reckon we worked for the Queen when I was in WRAF.

Can you tell me for a friend what did this mean for a grandfather OHMS? Is in prison or perhaps a tax collector or something else?
