Finding out whether someone still alive

Hi Gael an Gai - Thanks so much for your advice. :)

I've tried the Ryerson Index but no luck. The problem is, this lady (my grandmother) if still alive will be turning 100 next month - not great odds I know - and the last record I have of her is an electoral roll listing in 1937. My grandfather claimed to be widowed in 1941 but there seems to be no record of her death. He could have lied about that as he remarried a year later ... and died himself a year after that. It's a big mystery - my mother was separated from her when she was a toddler and I'm trying to find out what happened to her while my mother is still alive. She may also have remarried, in which case, I won't know her surname ... Feel like I'm going around in circles! lol

Thanks again : )

Cheers,
Carol

Hi Carol,

You can try the Ryerson Index http://ryersonindex.net/search.php as they have a number of notices including some 2010 notices for the Sydney Morning Herald.

Why not instead try to see if they are still alive by looking in the White Pages in the Phone book. I found a few distant relatives that way and now share information with them.

One was 92 and still living with his wife I discovered, but unfortunately he died last month before I could go and see them both in person.

Hi there,
Is there a way to find out whether someone has died after the BDM records allow for family research? E.g - how do you know if someone has died after 1979 in NSW? The only way I can think of doing this is to order a death certificate on the off-chance the person in question has died... but to do this for every state will get expensive! Any ideas most appreciated. :)

Cheers,
Carol
