Would these still be in the marriage registers if the marriage was later annuled and does anybody know what year annulment sort of became legal? I know its an odd question. lol. xx

Annulments predate the Church of England which was largely formed as the pope refused to annul Henry VIII's marr to Catherine of Aragon.

The marr would be in the registers and in the index.
I think the GRO will not issue an m.cert for a marr it knows to have been annulled.

Annulment and divorce are court decisions and are not usually communicated to Register Offices, so entries remain in the registers and we do not, unlike lots of other countries, annotate to say a marriage has ended. If a marriage was declared void, then that is a different matter.
The Registrar General can direct that a pencil note is inserted in the margin of any entry, Birth, Marriage or Death, which prohibits the issue of certificates from that entry.

When my friend was working on her one-name study, she ordered hundreds of certificates with no problem, but one marriage cert. in particular which she wanted was refused, so the index might have been marked up in some way?
It was not a recent one, so privacy was not an issue.

Gemma,

What makes you think there was an annulment involved? To be honest I have never come across one in several years of research.

Also, what is it that you are hoping to find / resolve? If you can provide some more details there will, no doubt, be someone on here who can provide some suggestions which might help you.

I just hoped that there was a REASON I couldn't find the marriage for them but chances are that I'm just missing it. lol. xxx

Gemma
Have you searched for marriages without a surname for the wife?
I hunted for a marriage for ages only to find that it was the 3rd marriage for the female and she'd moved from far north in England down to Sussex.

I have 2 living people in OH's tree who have anulled marriages, so it could possibly be the answer, but try other options first.

Thanks Gwyn. I will certainly go and have a look at that. They certainly are a funny lot this lot. ;) If anyone wants to have a look at the other thread and see if they can come up with anything I would really appreciate it. I dont seem to be able to put together a coherent thought with them at the moment. They are driving me insane!!!! GGGggggrrrr!!!! lol xxx
