Can anyone tell me what the actual duties of the occupation nurse, within a household, would be in the 1850s/60s please. I haven't had any joy on google.

In 1871 my OHs 3x gt aunt's occupation was lady's maid.

Many thanks

A nurse in a household could, of course, be a lodger who worked outside the house as a nurse. Or she could be a nursemaid, looking after and feeding a new baby where the mother had died or was ill. If she was a nurse to the family, it would have been a fairly well-off family to afford such.

But you say she was a lady's maid. Again that could have been that she was just lodging with the family and working elsewhere.

so far as I am aware, Florence Nightingale started the teaching of women to be nurses

before that, it basically was some woman willing to take care of a sick person ....... she might be capable or not!

In a wealthy hosuehold, a nurse would be brought in to tale care of the lady of the hosue after childbirth, or if she was sickly

There might also be a nurse who took care of the children from birth to .. whenever!

Nurse ruled the nursery

In many cases, a girl's nurse would actually move with her after marriage and might become her lady's maid
