Betty, I think I shall have to go and look for myself too. It isn't too far from me so won't be too much of a hardship!

The link in the email is as follows:

If you're interested in exploring the records that we hold, our First World War research signpost is a great place to start.

("First World War research signpost" is the link to click on)

I think you're right though, if I had read on, rather than excitedly following that link, I think it does connect to Ancestry as well, now I look at it.

I don't know what the index was in the email - how is it described?

Sounds as though SatNav has searched Ancestry though.

I believe there is free access at the moment to the WW1 records on Ancestry due to Remembrance.

Christine,
You don't have to wait. Ancestry has free access to their WW1 records until the end of Sunday in conjunction with Rememberence Week. So you can search for yourself.
As SatNav says, he doesn't appear to be there, but you might know some extra info that may tease him out of the woodwork.

I had the same experience when looking for my grandfather's records. When I actually went to Kew I found them, but every time I looked them up on line his name/records didn't come up.

Can only presume that it is human error: a person has to physically copy the records and they might occasionally miss one.

I searched on Ancestry service records, firstly with name, secondly with both service numbers and no name.
Ancestry claim to have all the available records.

Hi Annielaurie,

I don't have Ancestry at the moment, but will be getting one month free with my FTM 2011 update, so will look then. However, is that what Satnav will have looked for?

The index I looked at came with the National Archives newsletter email, which came today. There are lots of other Langleys on there, and you can view the original documents - unfortunately, mine isn't one of them!

You won't find his records by searching the National Archives website as they are not indexed on their site. The records are held there but you would need to go to look at them. Much easier for you though to search the Ancestry website as they have all the surviving service records.

Thank you Satnav! Did you find that somewhere different? I now know my aunt's information was correct! Where should I look now?

I have just looked through the WW1 National Archives records through their newsletter email that came today. I have looked before, but have never been able to find my grandfather there.

The thing is, that I KNOW his records are in the National Archives at Kew. Some years ago, my aunt managed the restaurant there, and a researcher took her to look him up. She saw his full service record.

I have tried putting minimal information in and adding to it, but still can't find him.

He was Hubert George Langley, born 1886 at Hove in Sussex. Lived in Twickenham Middx. when WW1 began (and afterwards).
Another aunt says he was in The 7th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, service no 11691. I didn't put those details in, in case it was incorrect. He was known as Jack Langley, but knowing what sort of person he was, I think he would have registered by his proper name.

If anyone can tell me how to find him, I would be very grateful!
