Have joined the Lancashire Library - thanks to other member's suggestions - in their historical newspapers have read many stories of industrial accidents ... and inquiries ... some with very gory details. You can search names, dates, etc.

The Factories Acts were first introduced at the start of the 1800's although were more to do with limiting the no of hours worked, rather than safety at work. This came later.

Have a look on wikipedia for some info on the subject

Hi Philip, i think you would need to know the name of the Company he worked for at the time of the accident as a starting point.

You could then contact / visit the relevant archives.

Example of what they might hold -

Compensation records
Accident books
Report books

Does anybody know records that might mention industrial accidents? I know 100 years ago it wasnt't the claim culture you have today so no Employers liabiliy!, My Great Grandfather Albert Smith B 1874 Birmingham was missing two middle fingers on his Right? Hand. I know he was an Iron Planer, Gas tube drawer and brazier in the 1910's were there any laws on this sort of thing?
Many thanks all!
