I had this when I discovered via the 1911 census that my Nana had not been an only child as the family believed, and that her parents had lost two children.

I discovered the names, dates of birth and death of these two little girls (my great aunts) by visiting the Northumberland archives and trawling through the baptismal and burial records for the village where they lived.

You don't say where your great grandparents live, but some areas have archives online and if you are lucky some areas have baptism records etc on The Church of Latter Day Saints website at

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm fairly certain I have found the correct birth/death (1905) and the child did have a familiar christian name.

Once again thankyou . . . . . Genes members never fail. Sometimes it just takes a promp to jog you to search somewhere you really should have thought of yourself ! ! !

Are there any names that are familiar to you.......could the child have been named after either of their parents or grandparents..?

Well, you could also search for deaths for those 9 you found .....

I always thought my late Grandfather (Nov.1903-1993) was an only child but looking more closely at the 1911 census I see his parents had another child that had died. His parents married in Feb.1903.

Between the relevant years (1904 - 1911) there are 9 children born with the Carr surname in the same town (they definately only lived in this town). Does anyone have any bright ideas how I can narrow it down . . . . I don't want to purchase all those certificates !
