Free Bmd has very good search engine once you get used to using it. but remember that genealogical search engines are not like Google. Whenever you enter search criteria, it is necessary for ALL of the data, not just some of it, to match. Less is often better.

However you can also use wild card characters such as ? or * to eke out spelling variations. So, for example, bag*ot* will return Bagot, Baggot, Bagott, Bagshot, Bagehot, Baghot, Baghott, etc etc.

You also need to bear in mind that the project is still work in progress and recent entries - marriages after around 1949, for example - may not yet be indexed on the site.

A widow would usually be married under her late husband's surname rather than her maiden surname.

That sounds logical, many thanks for replying.

On FreeBMD you click on the page number to see who has the same ref, In the early day it was 4 couple to a page . then two couples then in the early 1900,s was just the one couple.
You can search using just the two surnames though.

the marriage records will be the groom with his bride under her maiden name as they would appear on the marriage cert. will be the last time usually the lady will use her maiden name .

I'm trying to find wedding certificates for various relatives but I find it's a bit hit and miss (freebmd). I was thinking of trying to cross-reference the two parties so my question is whether a wife appears in the index under her married surname or her maiden one?
