I simply replied this person was a female and not the person she was looking for.

I would respond politely yes, people do send very short messages like this one, I think it is probably less a case of bad manners and more that most internet users are using various sites for 'conversation', and so they respond in that more casual way ( as they would in a conversation with someone they know, forgetting they are talking to a 'stranger' perhaps)

The idea that Frances is exclusively a girl's name is a modern convention.
On the 1841 census, over 12% of the Frances's were male.

All you need put is the Frances you have listed is female so wont connect,it doesnt call for a rude reply back surely,.they made a mistake thats all.....

Hi Travelman,

Manner's and common decency cost nothing.

How about "oops forgotten my manners!!! was who married to who??

leave it at that, hopefully next time they will use their manners and name the person that they think married Dorothy.

If you get another rude reply I'd just ignore it or send one asking why they want to know.

Good Luck. Lou

IGP

It's just the fact the PM did not say hello/please/thank you/could you/regards/much appreciated or anything that to me is common manners ..... or am I old fashioned ??!!

Good luck with your research too.

I always respond to every message I get regarding a possible connection, regardless of how it is worded. . My response is on the lines of:-

"Hi Member,

Yes the Fred Smith I have did marry a Dorothy Jones in 1898. She was a cousin of my wife's great grandad. How are you connected to the family, I would love to hear more?

Regards, IGP"

or

"Hi Member

Not sure if this is the same one as this looks like a different family. My Dorothy married a Peter Jones in Derby.

Good luck with your research

I have just received the following PM

"Was he married to Dorothy?"

Pretty rude I think - would you respond or delete?? The christian name of the person they are asking about is Frances (female spelling anyway) LOL
