Mark - a similar thing happened with the Canadian 1916 Prairie census. This appeared early in 2009, just after the 92 y closure ended. I don't know if it was just images, or just transcriptions or both (just images is my guess - my rellies were in Quebec so I never checked). After a couple of months, it vanished and a couple of months later appeared on Ancestry, indexed and needing a sub.

Earlier this year, LAC posted this:
All census returns from 1851 to 1916 have been digitized and are currently available on multiple websites. By the summer of 2011, all digital images and indexes to those census returns will be available on Library and Archives Canada website.

Presumably, LAC made a deal with Ancestry and in return for an exclusive use for a while, got the images and index (and cash I guess) for us all to use free.

I don't know re Cornwall - I never noticed those.

The site has quite a variety of records for Cheshire, but no images for these. What has images are the Durham BTs, and bonds and allegations (incl Allertonshire, a detached bit of the diocese arond Northallerton, Yorks). Also, quite a collection of Norfolk OPR images.

Many thanks for the heads up! I have loads of ancestors in Leigh, Lancashire and Atherton and around that area.

Does anyone know why these collections sometimes appear and then disappear? I managed to find a load of images in their Cornwall collection and save them but I wanted to go in to find some more but the collection has gone now.

Mark.

Flick's correct, but that area does extend to Rochdale - Bury - Bolton - Leigh.

Also Cheshire and Yorkshire only have 8 parishes between them.

Yesterday, the following was added to the FS beta site

England, Lancashire – Cheshire – Yorkshire Parish Registers, 1603-1992

They're not indexed, so you have to browse them. See:
