Hi all, I was wondering if someone could look up the marriage of James Bailey to a Lettitia Ann (not sure of maiden name). around 1857 Staffordshire.

Sorry for the uncertainty I have been looking for some time now but with no success. Any input would be accpreciated greatly.

Thanks again, Janette :)

This is the one I think Janette but it's not giving the brides name

Name: James Bailey
Year of Registration: 1857
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Stoke Upon Trent
County: Staffordshire
Volume: 6b
Page: 296

Janette there is obviously a problem with some of the transcriptions for 1857 Staffordshire
EG: on FreeBMD for sept q 1857 you get this
Marriages Sep 1857
Bailey James Newcastle L. 6b 45
Lawe Ruth Stone 6b 45
Lowe Ruth Stone 6b 45
Walker John Stone 6b 45

This is incorrect as you would not have Newcastle L and Stone marriages on same page so the James Bailey one is wrong and should be linked to another marriage, the image is very difficult to read and I could not determine the vol and page no

I have searched on just her first names but nothing obvious coming up. If the record has not been transcribed correctly then you will not get a match.

The record on FreeBMD needs to be corrected if possible and then it might match up.

Have you any idea which bit of Staffordshire it is a big county.

You could have a look on Staffs BMD although it's not complete

From the census' I know Lettitia was born in Harriseahead and James In Gillow Heath if that is of any help?

The James Bailey marr in 1857 as above is actually Newcastle Tyne vol 10b page 45 so I will make a correction on Feebmd

According to the 1861 census she was born in Wolstanton, Staffs?
Or is this the wrong one as James was born in Biddulph, Staffs?

Thanks Cathy, I've taken it off the 1881 which says Harriseahead however all the other census' say Wolstanton. Sorry for any inconveinence.

Thanks, Janette.

That's ok Janette I thought I had the wrong one! I wonder why they were both different for 1881 but perhaps they are more localised? I don't really know anything about the area?

Kind regards ,

I saw that one in 1861 and wondered, also her name is down as Lettice.

You might have to get a birth cert of a child first to get her maiden name

Yes, it's definately looking that way I think from each of the census' there is a lot of variation in how her name can be spelt which really doesnt help! I had never come across Lettice though ! I suppose from having looked at my own hand wiriting an 'a' can look like 'ce' !!

Thanks again

Ah! Could this be it?

Marriages Dec 1860 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bayley Hannah Congleton 8a 403
Bayley James Congleton 8a 403
Clare Letitia Ann Congleton 8a 403
Mitchell Levi Congleton 8a 403

Looks like they may have had children before they married? I also find them marrying in Congleton a little unusual?

Looks as thought this could be her birth as well mis-transcribed. Would fit in with her age on the census.

I'm getting even more confused as this is the 1861 record in findmypast?
