Researching John Boyd B cir 1850 Died 1896 Broken hill NSW
Father John Boyd, Mother unknown.
Rather long info but after 40 years of looking, this is all I have found.
CHILDREN.
John Nathan Boyd Born 21/11/1881, Poolamacca station.
Ada grace Boyd Born 9/12/1883 Nundora station NSW.
John Edward Boyd Born 17/3/1887 Bourke NSW
Annie Boyd Born 16/2/1889 Winton QLD. Cert. No 7383/1889 Qld
Emma Boyd Born 26/11/1890 Winton QLD.
Albert Ernest Boyd Born 12/3/1896 Acacia Dam via Broken Hill NSW.

The marriage is believed to have been on the 21 September (Wednesday) 1881, near Poolamacca (Torrawange? NSW) information taken off the birth certificate (No. 45, dated 10 April 1896) of his last child Albert Ernest Boyd.

The marriage is believed to have been on the 20 August 1881 at Poolamacca Station NSW information taken off the Birth Certificate No. 007383/1889 Winton Qld. issued for Annie Boyd
Informant Emma Boyd Mother, Eldashie Street Winton Qld. (Updated 28/8/2002 Ron.)

First recorded information of our family is the birth of John Nation Boyd junior, Born 21 November 1881, Born premature on an outback station called Poolamacca station, about 100 km. North of the present mining town of Broken Hill NSW.
John Nathan Boyd junior lived only 13 hours before he died, his death was listed as being due to being born premature. His mother Emma Vaughan was just 15 years & 8 months of age. (Death certificate Number 11119.)
Emma's father, John Vaughan being present at the birth, as he was listed as informant on death certificate.
John Nathan Boyd senior would have been around 33 years of age, but this is not certain as on several other certificates his age is given to be different.
On the 22/4/1887 on his sons John Edward Boyd birth cert. His age is given as 37 years. Informant is himself.

I have never been able to find his father or mother names out properly, although on his death certificate, it lists his father as John Nathan Boyd, occupation; teamster. But his mother was listed as unknown. (Cert. No. 152871). Informant Emma Boyd

It is my belief that in the raw outback life in the late 1800's, there were very few priests about.
So their marriage was not recorded as such on legal paper but was probably a "bush type marriage" and they just went on living together!

Occupations of John Nathan Boyd;
John Nathan Boydwas listed as Labourer (cert. No 152871).
John Boyd listed as Labourer age 43 yrs on Annie Boyd birth Certificate No. 007383 issued 1889 Qld
On Certificate No. 45. Horse Rider. (Cert. No. 11119),
On Certificate Cert. No 05190 Shearer.
On Certificate and cert. No 13486 Shearer
On Certificate Cert. No. 16536 as Carrier

Given as Caretaker on his daughters Emily's Birth Cert. No 1890/0008678 (000687!) when she was Born in Winton Qld 23/9/1890
He and his family seem to move around a fair bit, mostly as his itinerant type of occupation needed work.
In 1881 on the 22 November, (cert. No. 11119) he was on Poolamacca Station, which appears on the map of NSW to be about 100 kilometres north of Broken Hill NSW.
Next on the birth of his second child Ada Grace born December 1883 it is listed as Nundora Station, also on the map 150 km north of Broken Hill.
Then he seems to be on the move, heading north as his next child John Edward was born at Bourke NSW in March 1887.
Then his next known movement is the birth of both his daughters, Annie and Emma (Emily) Boyd at Winton Queensland. In 1888-1890.

Apparently while in Queensland, one of the places they live at Eldashie Street Winton.
I have checked with the Winton District Historical Soc. and there was no report of any of the children going to any school at Winton.
Also on Emma Boyd Birth Cert. Reg. No. 1890/008678 (000697) lists their address as Olio Creek Tank (Qld!)

When John and his family left the Broken Hill district to move up into Queensland for what ever reason he had. It would be a long slow trip, the only method of transport in the 1880's would be what ever he could supply himself.
Cob & Co. Coaches may have operated at this time, so they could have use the Cob & Co. Coach service, but it would have been an expensive way to travel for a large family!
Apparently he would have travelled by rough bush roads, poorly marked and in poor condition as there were no bitumen roads in them days. Most likely he would have also used the stock routes such as the Kidman Way from the western Qeensland area, heading down to the Adealaide cattle marketts in South Australia.

He would have used his own transport to move the family about, probably a wagon pulled by several horses, they would have carried all their food supplies and water with them. John & Emma would have taken with them, a good supply of flour, salt, tea, as well as a large amount of corned beef. When this supply of meat ran out they would have to resort to rabbits, kangaroo's, scrub turkeys, bush or wild pigeons or in fact any type of animal fit to eat.
These meals would most likely be cook in a camp oven, usually each night and last all the next day!
This would have been a slow trip to make for them, but they did it. If all went well they may have covered 15 to 20 miles per day.
No motels to stay in on a stormy night, no warm showers to clean one's self up after a long day on the road. Maybe an infrequent billabong or river occasionally to wash one's self in.
Then a big gap of 7 years, then he appears back at Broken Hill were his last child Albert Ernest Boyd is born in 1896.
On Albert's birth certificate his residence is given as Acacia Dam, this was apparently a small town about 20 km. North west of Broken Hill NSW, a town long gone the way most small outback town's go.
Despite years of searching I could find no information about this town! as if it never existed, but it did

John Nathan Boyd later died at Acacia Dam, Via Silverton, north west of the Mining town of Broken Hill on the 19 of October 1896, age 49 years, of primary bronchitis and secondary Pneumonia, he was sick for one week, doctor? At his death was Thos. B Belgrave. The Reverent, J. J. Murphy R/C. buried him at Silverton cemetery on 20 October 1896. Undertaker was a Mr. Bull. Information taken of his death cert. No 15281/1896.

Done, also hoping that someone living in Great Britten may have relations who came to Australia in the early 1800's

Hi Ron.

Given the area of places you mentioned in NSW ( Mining towns ) and the time frame.... most possible a bush outback wedding by a passing vicar in those days.

Have you tried contacting the Broken Hill Family history society?

Would have been very tough going in this particular area of our early Colonial ancestors, and there would have been no beg your pardons. Marriages conducted by the first passing vicar, and children born in tents and bapt well after their births.

Aus. Biography:
Myrtle Rose White "author", was born 1888 at Acacia Dam, near Broken Hill......third of ten children of native-born parents Mark Albert Kennewell, miner, and his wife Dinah Ann Adams. The birth was dramatic. Travelling with bullock teams and looking for land to settle, Dinah gave birth alone in a tent, during a dust storm in which her husband became lost while fetching a midwife.

Did search for you, but cant find anything conclusive regarding John Boyd's parentage.

Have checked all states, and the closest birth registered for a John Boyd circ.1850 ( with Father John ) was in 1853

BOYD, John EB 191271 Christening

Mother: Mary
Reg Year: 1853
Reg State: New South Wales
Ref Number: V1853425 52

Sorry i cant be more helpful.

and I think finding the ancestors in the UK will have to wait until the Boyds have been traced back to their arrival in Australia, and how they arrived (convict, assisted passage, free settler, etc)

The name is pretty common, could be English, Scottish or even Irish, so I wouldn't even now where to start looking!
