We have a g grandfather who left Lancashire and went on 'The City of Berlin' arriving in Boston on 19th March 1883. After that we have absolutely no information about him. He was 32 at the time so it is possible he started another family. It is so easy with the UK births marriages and deaths. Is it possible to access the US records - these are not on Ancestry.
Grateful for any help

when was he born please ?

He was born in Leigh Lancashire on 11th January 1851 - however, after this date he never gave his correct age - he always added on a couple of years so it appears on records as having been born 1846/47/48 etc. Not helpful I know. I think it was because his wife was a couple of years older

There's 14 trees with him on Ancestry. Do you have an Ancestry sub? If not, I will contact the tree owners for you. What do you want to know? Who was his first wife? These trees have him married to Elizabeth Schumaker. Who was he married to before?

All these trees have him born 1851 and married age 18 - so he likely to be your Alfred?

On the passenger list 1883 he's just listed as a visitor not a settler.

Many thanks for the responses. Yes, his marriage was to Elizabeth Schuhmacher and it is Elizabeth and his 9 children, one only 3 months old who he left behind when he went on the City of Berlin. He was listed as a visitor and headed for Boston but this entry is the last known information about him.

Those who put him down on Ancestry as dying in 1893/94 are just guessing.

His wife Elizabeth always put herself down as married and head of the household so I think she assumed he was alive and living ?? America.
