Can someone help me with directions on how to work out the relationship of two people on my tree? They each share the same ggg grandparents. Thank you.

If you share the same grandparents you're 1st. cousins.
Gt. grandparents= 2nd. cousins.
Gt. gt. grandparents= 3rd. cousins.
Gt. gt. gt. grandparents= 4th. cousins.

correct me if I am wrong,

but doesnt the genes tree service do this for you?

ie select one rellie and hover on another and it shows the relationship??

Try it in Ancestors or Descendants view - it works ok there!

To add to what Margaret says. If the two persons are of different generations you also need to work out the level of removal.

First count the number of g's for each one, back to the common ancestor.

Person 1 is ggg grandson = 4 g's
Person 2 is gg grandson = 3 g's

The lowest number is the degree of cousin, in this case, 3rd cousins.

Secondly, subtract the no of g's i.e. 4-3=1 to get the level of remove

So, in the example above they are 3rd cousins, once removed.

Janet, goto your family tree button,and open your tree,

select full tree.

click on a name and the info pane opens, below( half page)
now hover on any blood relative in the tree and it will show you the relationship!!
