Help please I have found Hildin Savage age 3 months living with Alfred and mary Savage, Beverley District on 1901 census. She is not on the 1911census this shows 6 children born 5 remaining alive and 1 died if I add Hildin there would be too many children all the others can be accounted for how do I find her .

The only child I could find born at the right time is Alice - I wonder if the 1901 census was just badly written

I have only found a birth for Alice in March 1901 and found no other births for a Savage in Beverley in late 1900 early 1901. I still think Hildin in 1901 could actually start with an Al and could well be the right person

There is no Alice born in Beverley March 1901 on the 1901 census that I can see

Just counting the numbers of children do add up in 1911 - 4 children at home - Alice with aunt and 1 had died pre 1901

Hope that is solved now .

There is a Mary Ellen Savage born lst quarter 1901 on Sculcoates, East Riding ref. 9d 1898. Sculcoates must be a mis-transcription I should think, but Beverley is East Riding. Hildin could be a mishearing for Ellen?

Edit - looked at Google, Sculcoates is a district of Hull, near enough to Beverley?

I don't know, Lynda, looking at the image of that 1901 census, I'm sure the name is not Alice. If you look at the way that the enumerator writes the letter A for Alfred, it's nothing like that. It is however exactly like the capital H on Head.
I agree that it has to be Alice, the age is right (3 months old on 31 March when census was taken) but I can't imagine what name the enumerator was trying to write!

Elizabeth2469049 Report 6 Dec 2010 20:54

The 1901 census - if you magnify the name it could be Helden - misspelling of Helen, Helen a version of Ellen, see my earlier entry? Not that I can find a Helen anywhere!

Is it possible that they were going to call her Hildin but changed their minds when they actually registered her as Alice Savege? There is one other person on freeBMD registered as Hildin three called Hilding and a Hildine.

Thelma Report 7 Dec 2010 11:46

The original household census was copied by the enumerator onto the image that is available and this may explain the name change.

Thankyou all for looking . no one in the family has any idea who Hildin is Alice has now passed away so I can not ask her .
