1911 Census summery books - put the persons surname in and
they all come up and when you look at the image it shows all the
families in that street. Only head of households then plus how many
individuals in that family. Great for getting the addresses of our ancestors
Good luck Irene

Disappointing really as the summary books are just that. You need to know where your ancestors were living and anyone looking for someone with a common name will not get any positive information as to which of the many people listed are likely to be their ancestor.

I can't get into it! Clicked on the England census under the 'what's new' list, but get

Please Search Again
The search request could not be completed because insufficient information was provided to Ancestry.co.uk. If the search request originated from another web site, please contact that site's administrator to resolve the problem.

But a search box opens if I do the same for the Welsh one...not that I have any Welsh residents!

Thank you, I'll try that - it was curiosity as much as anything !

I got the "Please search again " message when I first tried it but later it gave me a search box. However the problem seems to keep occurring at random, for example when selecting a record from the search results.

The summary books should be treated purely as a street directory.

Still not working properly.

The strange thing about these records was when I went
on to them first thing yesterday they were working fine and
I had a good search around. Went to GR to pass on the good news
then later went back to search and things went from bad to
worse. Perhaps things will improve in time. Irene

Well actually FMP is no more free than Ancestry or 1911. We will have to wait for Freecen to get round to it for free access.

Couldn't find a head of household that I knew was on the 1911 site as I'd paid for the access when it first came out. Found him under Mr ...................... It hadn't listed his first name on the summary.

maybe a useful tip depending on how common the surname is,

search under surname (in case it comes up Mr........ rather than the 1st name etc) to get the addresses on ancestry of where they lived.

If you get one in the right location, go to the 1911 census site & use their index. Put in their name and the first line of their address and see if your ancestor comes up. If he/she does you now know where he/she lived.

You can then alter the search by putting in the surname of your suspected family at that address and it comes up with all the people with that surname living there.

Hope this helps someone
