Jinet, it would have been so much easier if you had told us all this at the start
its pretty clear if no father is named then you are only going to be guessing.

Ernest Clifford was my Grt Grfather and a mystery. He married my Grt Grandma Mgt Ellen Burns in 1914 (certs). She Died in 1952. He then married in 1953 his name being on cert. Ernest Clifford Neve formerly known as May.
Ernest Clifford Neve May birth on 1891 census gives birth as Norfolk I have cert says Ernest Clifford, no father, mother Esther Neve nee Copland in workhouse, lingwood, norfolk.

In the 1881 Census John Jos May (poss father) aged 21 years working as a Driller in a factory, his wife Dorothy aged 18 years (cant find death reg) and daughter Annie Burns aged 8 mo.

In the 1901 Census John Joseph May aged 43 years a Plasterer along with his wife Ellen aged 35 years (cant find birth or death reg) Ernest Clifford aged 10 years, Grace aged 4 years (cant find brith reg) and William Ernest aged 3 months. (ord cert.)

Finally in the 1911 Census John Joseph aged 51 years appears to be working as a general labourer with his 2nd wife (m.1953) Mary Elizabeth aged 31 son John William Ernest aged 10 years, Ethel Margaret aged 5 years.

Im just not sure now I am baffled to say the least. Any help with this would be absolutely fantastic in finding who Ernest's parents are.

Divorce was only for the rich in those days and need Parliament approval. Many just parted ways and either remarried bigamously or lived with a new partner and took on their surname if the was the woman

Jinet Report 30 Dec 2010 19:30

Hi,

Can someone please tell me how I go about looking to see if there was a divorce in 1899.

I have John Wm Neve married in 1879 then again in 1899 can't find death of 1st wife so hoping this will help me further.

Thank you for any help
