Everything back to normal today for me and like you
IGP I have FTM and various other backup systems
incase of problems. This advice I must admit was given
by yourself and have been grateful for it, so thank you.

FTM will allow you to maintain as many separate trees as you wish.

Export your GR tree - under Family Tree, Gedcoms - you will receive the file by email. Save this to your PC and import it to FTM, creating a new tree.

Personally I do things the other way around. FTM is always my master record. This is backed up and saved securely. I keep a number of selective trees for various purposes but a single master which has everything on it.

Periodically I then upload a version back to websites such as GR, Tribal, Ancestry etc so it is not an issue if these are trashed for any reason.

I'm sorry, Elizabeth, but I'm the wrong person to answer your questions. I'm sure there are many people here who can help. I must admit I am quite computer illiterate. I have never downloaded or uploaded my tree. I do all of my original work on Familytree Maker. The tree that I have on GR is just a skeleton tree which I have entered manually.

My husband occasionally downloads our tree from Familytree Maker to a cd which we keep as a backup.

Edit: Oh good! I see while I was typing others have been able to answer your questions.

Elizabeth, you should be able to pick up any of the free tree programs and download your GR tree to them - but you don't actually need to download them at all, just make sure you copy a GEDCOM version of your GR file onto your hardrive, and it will be there for you to transfer wherever you wish in the future.

Incidentally, if you have FTM, and other programs, you can run more than one GEDCOM on them. You just close the one you have running (save it as a GEDCOM first to be on the safe side, though it will save as an FTM file anyway) and then open another.

I have a single enormous tree on my hard-drive which contains everyone I have ever researched, including non-related people. It doesn't mess things up, cos you can pick out reports and trees that only include your own relatives or the ones you want to fill out with stories. It does no harm to have loads of others on it as well.

Every now and again I send a Gedcom from Genes to myself. It arrives as an attachment to an email.I don't do anything with it but it is a backup, just in case.
I can also forward the Email to relatives, two so far.

I think it's foolish to have the only copy of your tree online. Get a Family Tree program and have your tree on your home computer. Also keep copies of it elsewhere in case home computer crashes.

Yes, that is correct. I think the fix has been to stop a drop down box obscuring the line below if you hover over the name. A lot of people had complained about that in the past.

David Report 5 Jan 2011 17:33

mine is on with data but by each name it has tree matches record matches & nos by each persons name
are yours the same

Will you please all calm down. It appears GR are apparently making some program updates. Try logging of, shut down your browser and start up again. Works wonders when upgrading is going on. You could also try hitting the F5 key to refresh the page.

As far as backups are concerned, I keep my master tree on my PC using Family Tree Maker and have several copies saved in safe places. My GR tree can be trashed at any time as I simply refresh it by uploading a new gedcom.
