Possibly because John comes from Ioannis/Johannes???

Look here - it gives lots of abbreviations for names which might help.

I found my ancester Joseph Coward b. 1768 on Family search his father is listed as Jno.

This name comes up twice on a different branch of of my tree. Is it a name or does it stand for something else. Does anyone know?
