Did not note if you found them on 1851 census but could this be Jane residing with her brother Patrick Duffy? If so you could look for a Duffy Murphy marriage in Ireland.
A website you could try:

Hello Lance,

For years I couldn't find out about my ancestor's origin apart from that he was from Ireland.

I was lucky this year when the catholic records were released on Scotlandspeople (he lived in Scotland before moving to Liverpool). I was extremely lucky as the particular church he married in actually listed the county he was born in. I always hoped but never believed I'd actually find the area.

I also managed to find his second marriage in Liverpool which listed his parents. However, even though there is an absolutely brilliant genealogical site on the area he was born, i haven't been able to find any records in Ireland itself. When you go back as far as the early 1800s, they don't always have any more records. That particular area even had surviving 1831 records but I couldn't find him or his parents. He may have moved to Scotland before then.

I just wanted to wish you luck, don't expect that you'll find any records but don't give up.....you never know :)))

Williams occupation then was a labourer.(according to the 1841 census) I struck gold when finding the 2 sons were apprenticed to a painter. They both went on to continue the work with the young William marrying Maria Holt, producing a son, again a William ( my gt grandfather ) who continued as a house painter employing 3 men. It was a lucky link for me but Oh, how I would like to get across the water and continue the search in Ireland. I have marriage certs of William and Maria as above,of 1845, and the cert of William (the later employer painter) marrying Esther Woodcock in 1869
I have done the work at the M/cr Library using Ancestry. I haven't used Find my past, but could I have made any more progress there ?

Thanks again everyone. You are brilliant

You state in you earlier thread "you havent been at this very long"..start worrying that its "not looking good " after a few years...!!
Family Search is long and hard detective work especially the further back you get and with a "Murphy" Surname ...what can you say...You have obviously been lucky so far and especially as the family stayed for years around Deansgate...
I take it they were RC...?
Do you have any Birth /M.Certs.?
What was Wms.occup.

Thanks everyone. Not looking too good is it? On the 1841 census the family were living in Grigson,or Gregson Pl.( or something very similar due to the handwriting) Deansgate Manchester From then on for about a 100yrs the Murphy family stayed in and around Deansgate

You will not be able to check passenger lists because Ireland was part of the UK in those days and they would simply have crossed on a ferry. Have you tried the 1851 census? I have Irish ancestors and the county of origin is shown on all censuses except 1841.

If you look at the age of the children you will see Wm is aged 58 ...Jane 50 then Thomas 20 Wm 15 and Emma 12...This indicates to me there were more children than is listed on the Census...FMP is Find my Past and Barbara sees an Ellen b 1829 Lancs.on that site...
Where were they living in Manchester

Thanks, but what does FMP stand for. Sorry, haven't been at this very long

Barbara

Barbara Report 12 Jan 2011 16:28

On FMP it says Ellen Murphy born 1829 in Lancashire so this indicates they arrived before 1829.

Hi. At last I have traced my Murphy ancestry back to Manchester in 1841(census) but the whole family were born in Ireland and I don't know where to go from here. No details on any census of where in Ireland. The youngest,Emma is shown to have been 12yrs old in1841 but again, born in Ireland. I have all the names and ages. William (head) 58yrs. Jane,50. Thomas,20. William,15 and Emma 12. Is there a way of checking ship arrivals, no doubt to Liverpool, with passenger lists between about 1829 and 1841 ? I thought it might be possible to define which Murphys on lists as the whole family appear to have arrived together. Also, I don't know how to check movements in Liverpool or Manchester between those dates. Can anyone help at all? I really am stuck Thanks. Lance Murphy
