Just looked up birth registration and have found
2 different surnames for the birth of 1 child.
Same references and page nos.
How can this be possible.

Its because the parents werent married but the father attended th registration and his name is on the birth cert. Whichever surname you order the cert in you get the same cert, Technically the child can call themselves by either surname

Susan,

You probably are ware of this already, but just in case.....

Just because two births have the same references and page number, does not necessarily mean they are the same child.
Each page has a number of births on it (I think the exact number depends on which year you are talking about).

In theory, there could well be two different babies on the same page, both have the same first name but have different surnames.

The indexing of both father and mother's name is a relatively recent practice, and certainly I have not seen any examples in, say, the 1800's

Are you able to post the details on here so someone can have a second look?

Sorry to you good people who have carried on the post on here.
I took it that Shirley was the last I would hear.
It is
Shirley Lister 1935, Helmsley, Yorkshire (mother King)
Shirley Metcalfe 1935 Helmsley Yorkshire (Mother King)
both have vol. 9d page 600.

Lister was her name from the illegit father
Metcalfe was from who her mother married a few years after.
Apparently Shirley married as a Metcalfe.
I hope you can understand this.
Thank you,
Sue
